Engineering: Off to 'very good' start

Leaving Certificate engineering pupils got off to a good start yesterday, with papers at both higher and ordinary level described as "very good".

The candidates already had a lot of pressure taken off them going into the written exam, with many of the marks awarded for project and practical work completed during the school year.

Kenny Donagher of the ASTI and Summerhill College, Sligo, said there were no major challenges in the higher level paper.

He welcomed the marriage between design and engineering in the question, accompanied by an illustration, about the classic 1920s tubular steel table by famous Irish architect and designer Eileen Gray.

He said that while aes- thetics were always important in the project work, it had not been a feature of the written paper, and he welcomed the innovation.
