Government considering range of options on third-level fees

Education Minister Batt O'Keeffe has said the Government is considering a number of options in relation to the reintroduction of third-level fees.

Mr O'Keeffe has repeatedly stated his support for the move, despite widespread anger from students, who say it will prevent thousands of people from going to college.

Speaking today, however, the minister said the current system of free third-level education could not continue given the disastrous state of the public finances.

Mr O'Keeffe, who is preparing a report on the matter for Cabinet, says he is considering up-front fees, a loans system or a combination of both in order to raise revenue.
