O'Kelly goes back to the classroom as part of Engineers Week

Irish and Leinster rugby player Malcolm O'Kelly was one of many volunteer engineers to go into schools around the country today to enthuse students about maths as part of Engineers Week 2010.

Engineers Ireland's Volunteer Day featured nearly 1,000 volunteer engineers around Ireland working on maths puzzles and worksheets with over 20,000 students to improve understanding of the subject.

O'Kelly, a qualified engineer, returned to his old school Templeogue College.

Engineers Ireland also today launched a report calling for greater resourcing of maths teaching at second level and the requirement for teachers to have specific education qualifications in the area of maths and the sciences to teach these subjects.

"There is clearly a widely held view that the ongoing problems across maths and the sciences in our education system are not helping Ireland," said Engineers Ireland director Jack Power.

Engineers Week 2010 runs until Saturday and is focused on promoting the benefits of a career in the area of engineering. The week features nearly 150 activities and events around Ireland.
