Third-level colleges face €4bn shortfall

Third-level colleges face â�¬4bn shortfall

Third level colleges need an extra €4bn to cope with the increasing number of students, according to a new report.

The Higher Education Authority (HEA) report, obtained by the Irish Times, reveals that student numbers are expected to rise by 30% over the next 10 years.

The shortfall has once again raised the spectre of the reintroduction of third-level fees, a move ruled out in the revised Programme for Government.

The HEA says 40% college buildings around the country are seriously inadequate.

Some 60% of buildings at DCU need to be replaced, and 50% of structures at UL and UCD.

The authority says it simply can't provide a world class system and drive economic revival without the€4bn - but it also admits its unlikely to get it.

The report has been passed onto the group tasked with coming up with a strategy for higher education. That group is set to report in June and is likely to support the call for a return of fees.
