Industry and students share ideas in Galway

Over 90 representatives from business and industry in Galway attended the recent Digital Media Open Day in Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) where students showcased innovative websites they developed as part of their degree programme.

Second and third year students on the BSc degree in Business Computing and Digital Media developed numerous websites for businesses who attended the inaugural Digital Media Open Day last February (2008).

They developed websites for retail and food-processing businesses, arts and culture groups, and marketing and services businesses, employing the latest digital media techniques.

'Everyone attending the recent open day commented on the high quality of the work on view together with the innovative nature of the digital media techniques they employed,' said Dr Robert Loughnane, lecturer and Open Day co-ordinator.

'The students spent six months developing the websites which are all now up and running. They will be assessed on these projects as part of their overall degree programme.'

The Digital Media Open Day serves as a forum for local business people to exchange innovative ideas with young GMIT students on the BSc in Business Computing and Digital Media, and to avail of expertise from the GMIT Digital Media Centre.
