The good news for students who have applied for third-level grants this year is that almost two-thirds of them have already been awarded.
This is according to Student Universal Support Ireland (SUSI), which has released figures that show a huge improvement in the body’s efficiency over this time last year. So, far, some 39,000 grants have been awarded out of an expected 60,000.
At the same time last year, the problem-beleaguered body had awarded just 6,000 grants, leaving many students struggling to pay college fees and meet general living expenses. The body, which was set up to effectively streamline student payments, originally experienced major difficulties thanks to a systems failure.
However, grants payments this year remain largely on track – all students who met the SUSI deadlines and submitted the required documents have been awarded their grants within the three-month deadline.
