Irish Students Are Going To Poland To Study Medicine

Irish families say goodbye to children for 6 years.

A dozen Irish families will meet on Thursday to learn about Bydgoszcz, Poland, where their children are not accepted to Irish universities – are going to study medicine for the next 6 years.

The students and their families have been considering and researching going abroad for a months, but many of them have only decided to leave Ireland after the last round of CAO offers as they did not get offered the courses they dreamed of in Ireland. With Leaving Cert points requirements going up from year to year, it is more difficult to pursue a medical education than ever.

On Thursday, 5.30, Medical Poland, that helps Irish students begin their medical journey in Poland and makes sure they get the best quality education at the Polish universities, will show what it is like to study in Bydgoszcz, at Collegium Medicum. The event takes place at Medical Poland, 63 Lower Gardiner Street, Dublin 1. The Polish Ambassador will also encourage students to embrace the country and learn not only the names of each bone in Latin (and English) but also learn the country’s culture and great tradition. There is a lot to learn about as the country’s oldest university dates 1364.

“We are still waiting for the moment when Poland will be the first choice for Irish students, as it is for three sons of the President of a Scandinavian university. Scandinavians stated study medicine in Poland 21 years ago due to difficulty getting places in their home countries. Now, they study in Poland because they have recognized the education quality there”, says professor Jawien, founder of medical programmes through English in Bydgoszcz, Poland and President of European Society for Vascular Surgery. He is a well known medical figure and now is looking for Irish students to join their colleagues in Poland.

“We trust that after graduating, Irish doctors will return home to serve the Irish society, as many of their parents do now. The graduates of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Pharmacy and Physiotherapy will come back with exceptional medical knowledge received in Poland, that ranks 2nd in OECD in education (Better Life Index).” adds Artur Banaszkiewicz from Medical Poland. The country hosts almost 50 thousands students from abroad and is one of the biggest EU student hubs.
