Careers in the public service are often occupied by those who have a deep commitment to improving society and have a desire to better the community around them. All careers in this sector are challenging and important and often include a very real element of danger. While the fundamental role of some professions can be to inform and entertain the public, the mission of the public services is to protect and save the lives of the public; not something to be undertaken lightly.

The selection process for the Gardaí, ambulance, fire or prison services can be difficult; a number of attributes can help at the application stage. A good standard of physical fitness and education are required, so a third level qualification would be of great value.
