UL library receives a major collection

Minister of State for Overseas Development at the Department of Foreign Affairs, Peter Power TD, was at the University of Limerick today to mark the contribution of a major consignment of books on the developing world to the Special Collections department of the Glucksman Library at UL.  Ireland’s Government aid organisation, Irish Aid has facilitated the purchase of the book collection, which will support teaching and learning in the areas of politics, economics, history, culture and education in the developing world.

Speaking from the event Minister Power said: "I am delighted to be in a position to make a donation of books on global development from Irish Aid to the Glucksman Library at the University of Limerick.  My hope is that the donation will help promote engagement with these issues among a new generation of students. The move of the Irish Aid headquarters to Limerick this month provides a great opportunity to further strengthen the sharing of knowledge and expertise with the University of Limerick in the fight against global poverty.  This evening's ceremony hosted by President Barry reflects that spirit of collaboration".

Professor Don Barry, UL President, said “the University had a very sincere intention to continue to nurture a strong link with Irish Aid and to build the values of justice and sustainable development into the very ethos of the University.”

“This new addition of material to the Glucksman library represents a very important contribution to the University’s capacity to undertake work in the field of development studies and development education.  For ten years, UL has offered a Masters and Doctoral programme in Peace and Development Studies.  Increasingly this has addressed the concerns of the developing world and has drawn students from Africa and Asia, including Irish Aid scholarship holders,” said Professor Barry.

“Books are the building blocks for any University and this most generous donation is a deeply appreciated beginning to mark Irish Aid’s arrival in Limerick and an auspicious step towards securing a sustainable future for those less fortunate than ourselves,” concluded Professor Barry.
