The number of full-time undergraduates on campus stands at over 4000, with a further 700 students doing Apprenticeships and 1200 enrolled on lifelonglearning programmes. The Institute offers a broad range of programmes in the areas of Business, Humanities, Computing, Creative Media, Science, Engineering, Nursing, Health, Music, Sports and Hospitality. Recent new programmes have included Applied BioScience, Pharmaceutical Science, Food Science, Midwifery, Public Relations Business, Early Childhood Studies, and Building Services Engineering. The Institute is launching a new 3-year, Level 7 Degree in September 2009 in Performing Arts. Applicants to this degree will be required to do an audition, as well as having the minimum entry requirements at Leaving Certificate, or equivalent. The institute is also offering a 3 year level 8 degree in Humanities commencing September 2010. Recent years have witnessed the transformation of the Dundalk campus, which is set on 90 acres. The Dr. T.K Whitaker Building, incorporates a Library and Information Resource Centre. The Padraig Faulkner Building accommodates a range of student services including a Gym, Sports Hall, Shop, Health Centre, Counselling Services and Chaplaincy. There is an excellent choice of new student acccommodation located directly on-campus, costing just €80 per person, per week. The apartments are all fitted out to a high spec and are currently in high demand from Irish students and from the growing number of European and International students on campus at DKIT. The Institute recently opened a state-of-the-art Nursing and Health Studies School, accommodating 400 Nursing and Health Studies students. The building features an interactive A&E Unit, a number of simulated hospital wards and a unique sensory garden. The Institute recently opened a 750-seater Campus Restaurant, and a Performing Arts Theatre. Also new on the campus is a wind turbine, the first of its kind on a third-level campus, and currently generating 50% of the Institute’s electricity requirements. The Institute is pioneering the way in Renewable Energy studies, with a Level 9, Masters Degree in Renewable Energy Systems. There are also several postgraduate options available at DkIT, both taught Masters programmes, and Masters by research, in the areas of Business, Humanities, Science and Engineering. The Institute will be opening a new school on campus in Informatics, Music and Creative Media in January 2010. Dundalk Institute of Technology is ideally located mid-way along the Dublin-Belfast corridor, just 45 minutes from Dublin Airport, and one hour from Belfast. There are excellent bus and rail links to Dundalk from both cities. The town of Dundalk, with a population of 30,000, is a vibrant student town, that has enjoyed a rejuvenation in recent years with new urban facilities such as the Ice Dome, Soccer Dome, All-Weather Racing Track, Leisure Centres, Retail Parks, Theatre, Cinemas and Restaurants.
